Students create a number line from 1000 to 1,000,000 using a paper strip or string that is 10 meters long. Numbers collected on the Newswire in Lesson 2 are placed on the number line using benchmarks to show the relative distance between the numbers. The activity helps students recognize relative sizes of numbers through the millions.

Materials Preparation

Create a Number Line. To create the 10-meter number line, we suggest three options. (See Figures 1–4 in Developing the Lesson.) The adding machine tape is easiest to use, but may not be readily available. For Options A and B, you will mark the benchmark intervals on paper number lines with the whole class. If you use Option C, prepare the benchmark interval markings before class.

Option A

Use a 10-meter strip of adding machine tape.

Option B

Cut 18 sheets of 81/2-inch × 11-inch paper in half lengthwise and tape these strips end to end to create a paper strip approximately 10 meters long.

Option C

Use a 10-meter piece of wire or cord. If your original Newswire display from Lesson 2 is 10 meters long, prepare it for this activity by sliding all the numbers to one end or removing them temporarily. Mark meters with a red marker and decimeters (10 centimeters) with a green marker. Each meter will represent 100,000 units and each decimeter will represent 10,000 units on the number line. Prepare red and green cards or tags and hang them at the 100,000 intervals and the 10,000 intervals, respectively.

TIMS Tip

Attach the number line to the wall using masking tape or push pins. If 10 meters of uninterrupted wall length is not available, wrap the number line around the inside corner(s) of the classroom.
