TIMS Challenge

This item may be used as a Problem of the Week.

1. A–B.
Tables may vary. The table below was organized first by number of dimes, then by number of nickels, then by number of pennies.

2.
Strategies and tables may vary. Possible strategy: I started with the most possible number of dimes, and the most possible number of nickels, then filled in the rest with pennies. Then I used the most possible number of dimes, and the second most possible number of nickels, then filled in the rest with pennies. Then I used the second most possible number of dimes, and so on. I continued this pattern until I ended with zero dimes and zero nickels.

D. How Many Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes

    1. Nila has 22¢. Use this table to list all the different combinations of coins she could have.

    2.

    3. Show a way to organize your work so you can tell when you have all the ways. Use a separate sheet of paper if you need more room.
  1. Extra Challenge: How many ways can you make 36¢ without using any quarters? Make a table and explain your strategy for making sure you have all the possibilities. (You do not have to include all the number sentences.)
