Lesson 2

Tenths

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to turn to the Grace's Base-Ten Pieces page in the Student Activity Book. Ask student pairs to read and answer Questions 1–2. After a few minutes, have students share their answers and then introduce Grace's problem.

Assign student pairs to work on Questions 3–6. While students are working, circulate to help them organize and clarify their solutions.

  • How do you know you have the smallest number?
  • How do you know you have the largest number?
  • What number is one-tenth larger than 2 skinnies? (3 tenths or 0.3)
  • What number is one-tenth larger than 1 flat and 1 skinny? (1.2 or 1 and 2 tenths)
  • What number is one-tenth larger than 2 flats? (2.1 or 2 and 1 tenth)

To close, have students share how to put Grace's numbers in order from smallest to largest.

Use the Grace's Base-Ten Pieces page in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to represent decimals using base-ten pieces [E5], use numbers to write decimals to the hundredths [E6], make connections among symbols, words, and base-ten pieces [E7], and compare and order decimals to the hundredths using models [E8].

Targeted practice for these Expectations is in Lesson 6 Workshop: Decimal Concepts.
