Developing the Lesson

Part 4. Analyze Packs, Flats, Skinnies, and Bits

Solve the Linda's Base-Ten Pieces Problem. Introduce the Linda's Base-Ten Pieces page in the Student Activity Book. Organize students in pairs to work on this activity.

The problem parallels Grace's Base-Ten Pieces page in Lesson 2. Review how this problem is different from Grace's problem. Remind students to write complete and organized answers by reviewing Math Practices Expectations 1, 2, and 5 on the Math Practices page in the Student Guide Reference section.

MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know the questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.

Once expectations are set, have students complete the questions. Circulate to answer questions and help students clarify their writing.

Use the Linda's Base-Ten Pieces page to assess students' progress with representing decimals with base-ten pieces [E5], using words and numbers to read and write decimals to the hundredths [E6], and ordering decimals to the hundredths using models [E8].

Targeted practice for these Expectations is in the Workshop in Lesson 6.

Use the Linda's Base-Ten Pieces Feedback Box to assess students' progress with the following Math Practices Expectations:

Review Student Work. Upon finishing, ask each group to attach a Linda's Base-Ten Pieces Feedback Box page from their Student Activity Book to their work. Tell students to exchange their work and use the box to provide feedback to their peers. Choose some examples to share with the class and collect the work so you can provide your own feedback using the second Feedback Box. See the reviewed student work samples in Figures 2 and 3.
