Developing the Lesson

Part 3. Hundredths Using Words and Symbols

Play the Hundredths, Hundredths, Hundredths Game. Each pair of students will need flats, skinnies, and bits to play the game, as well as the Hundredths, Hundredths, Hundredths Game Board page in the Student Activity Book.

Introduce the game by displaying the Game Board and reviewing the rules in the Hundredths, Hundredths, Hundredths Game section in the Student Guide. Ask two students to demonstrate the game or play a sample game with a student. The first player builds a number using base-ten pieces and records his or her number using base-ten shorthand. The second player then records both the common fraction and the decimal fraction and says the number out loud. If the second player does all three things correctly, he or she receives 3 points. If any part of the second player's response is incorrect, he or she will lose a point for each part that is incorrect.

Play several rounds during the demonstration game. Be sure to include some examples of numbers that are made without following the fewest pieces rule, such as the example at the bottom of the Student Guide page, which shows 2.41. Allow time for students to play the game in class.

After playing the game, assign the Homework section in the Student Guide.
