MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students measure objects in the classroom to the nearest meter, decimeter, centimeter, and millimeter. They use decimal notation to record measurements through hundredths of a meter.

Content in this Lesson

  • Measuring lengths in metric units (to the nearest m, dm, cm, and mm) [E4].
  • Representing decimals using base-ten pieces and number lines (metersticks) [E5].
  • Reading and writing decimals to the hundredths using words and numbers [E6].
  • Understanding place value for decimals [E7].
  • Choosing the most appropriate unit of measure when measuring [E4].

Lesson Preparation

Prepare Meter Benchmarks. Place a piece of tape on a wall or a door 1 meter from the floor and another piece 2 meters from the floor in a location that is visible to all students. These will be used for estimating heights using the benchmarks 1 m and 2 m. Cut pieces of string one meter long, one for each student, or have students measure and cut strings at the end of Part 1.
