Est. Class Sessions: 3–4

Homework and Practice

  • Assign some or all of Questions 16–21 in the Explore section of the Student Guide for homework. Students will need a piece of Centimeter Graph Paper.
  • In the Homework section of the Student Guide, students are asked to find errors in Miss Take's graph of Roberto's data. Accordingly, this homework must be assigned after students have completed the Roberto's Data Assessment Master. Sample student work is shown in Figure 7.

Notice that Ana identified errors on the axes, both in scaling and labeling. She also recognized that the data points were not plotted correctly. Miss Take did not accurately determine where the average distances of 0.95 m, 1.79 m, and 2.97 lie along the vertical axis. Ana also demonstrated knowledge of how to draw a best-fit line through a set of data points.
  • Assign Home Practice Parts 6, 7, and 8. Part 6 provides practice writing and ordering decimals. In Part 7, students compare and order fractions. Part 8 asks students to match decimals to a picture or fraction representation.
  • Assign DPP items O–T. Use DPP items O and Q in Part 3 to prepare students for scaling their graphs. In Task R, students draw using base-ten shorthand then order decimals. Bit S practices reading centimeter measurements on a ruler. In Task T, students show a fraction and decimal in five ways.
  • DPP Task P challenges students to use patterns and efficient tools and strategies to determine the number of people at a party. This item is a Problem of the Week.
