Many Ways to Show a Decimal
Est. Class Sessions: 1–2Developing the Lesson
Part 2. Use Fraction Circle Pieces to Show and Compare Decimals
Show Fractions. For Questions 4–14 in the Student Guide, students will need the red, pink, purple, and green fraction circle pieces. Have them store the remaining pieces.
Ask students to work in pairs to answer the questions. For Questions 4–10, students use fraction circle pieces to represent decimal fractions and connect the representations to common fractions.
For Questions 11–14, students partition one whole and one-half using fraction circle pieces and then represent their partitions using addition number sentences. For example, Figure 3 shows one way to partition a pink piece (0.5) to answer Question 11.
As students work, ask them to make connections between the symbols and the pieces:
Compare Fractions. Question 14 asks students to compare fractions in number sentences using <, >, and =. They justify their answers using fraction circle pieces. Talk with student pairs and ask them to connect the numbers and symbols in the number sentences with their representations of the fractions using circle pieces.
