TIMS Task

Discuss students' strategies for solving the problems. If students have trouble developing a strategy, encourage them to use equivalent fractions as in Unit 8 Lesson 8.

  1. 45 minutes; 3/4 = 45/60
    1. 15 minutes
    2. 30 minutes
    3. 20 minutes
    4. 10 minutes
    5. 75 minutes
    6. 210 minutes;
      Possible strategy: 3 hours is 3 × 60 = 180 minutes
0.5 hrs is a half hour or 30 minutes
      180 + 30 = 210 minutes

D. Trumpet Practice

Ana's trumpet teacher told her to practice 3/4 of an hour every day. Since 1 hour = 60 minutes, Ana used this number sentence to find the number of minutes she must practice each day: 3/4 = ?/60.

  1. Complete Ana's number sentence to find the minutes in 3/4 hour.
  2. Use Ana's method or your own strategies to find the following:
    1. How many minutes are in 1/4 hour? ______________________
    2. How many minutes are in 1/2 hour? ______________________
    3. How many minutes are in 1/3 hour? ______________________
    4. How many minutes are in 1/6 hour? ______________________
    5. How many minutes are in 11/4 hours? ______________________
    6. How many minutes are in 3.5 hours? Show or tell how you know.
