TIMS Bit

This item provides practice estimating volume. Choose an oddshaped jar that has a volume between 1000 cc and 2000 cc (1 liter and 2 liters) for this activity. Show students 100 cc of water as a benchmark. Discuss students' estimation strategies.

For Question 2, you will need a graduated cylinder (1000–2000 cc).

E. Estimating Volume

  1. Estimate the volume of the jar your teacher shows you. Write down your estimate and be ready to share your estimation strategy with the class.
  2. After everyone has made his or her estimate, a student from the class will find the volume of the jar using a graduated cylinder.
