TIMS Task

Refer students to the Multidigit Multiplication Strategies Menu and the Division Strategies Menu in the Student Guide Reference section.

    1. 2442
    2. 4000
    3. 2196
    4. 2574
    5. 34 R1
    6. 176

Possible mental math strategies for B and D:

1B:
5 tens × 8 tens =
40 tens: 400
1D:
26 × 100 = 2600
2600 − 26 = 2574
  1. Possible strategy for 1F: 1200 ÷ 6 = 200 and 600 ÷ 6 = 100, so the answer will be between 100 and 200, but closer to 200 since 1056 is closer to 1200 than 600.

F. Computing Multiplication and Division

Use paper and pencil or mental math, and your Multidigit Multiplication Strategies Menu and Division Strategies Menu to compute the following. Choose one problem. Show or tell how you can solve it using mental math. Circle this problem. Estimate to check if your answers are reasonable.

    1. 33 × 74 =
    2. 50 × 80 =
    3. 61 × 36 =
    4. 26 × 99 =
    5. 273 ÷ 8 =
    6. 1056 ÷ 6 =
  1. Show or tell your estimation strategy for one problem in Question 1.
