Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.

MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students explore number patterns involving square numbers. They make data tables and draw graphs to analyze how square number patterns grow. They write rules and formulas to describe the growth and make predictions. Students compare the growth of two different kinds of patterns and their corresponding graphs: those built from the multiples of a number (straight lines) and those built from the squares of numbers (curves).

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying and finding square numbers [E1].
  • Identifying and describing number patterns [E3].
  • Using variables in formulas to represent number patterns and make predictions [E4].
  • Representing number patterns using words, tables, and graphs [E8].
  • Making predictions and generalizations using data tables and graphs [E9].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Square-Inch Tiles. Prepare bags of square-inch tiles. As with Lesson 3, each bag should contain 5 tiles of each color for a total of 25 tiles per bag. For this lesson, students will work in groups of four and combine their tiles so they have 100 tiles for the activity.
