TIMS Task

Possible number sentences include: 100 ÷ 3 = 33 R1 and 33 + 33 + 33 + 1 = 100. Ask students to share their strategies. Possible strategies include:

  1. Use pennies or other counters.
  2. Use a mental math strategy: 30 + 30 + 30 = 90; 100 is ten more. 10 ÷ 3 = 3 with 1 left over. 30 + 3 = 33, 100 ÷ 3 = 33 with 1 left over
  3. Use a calculator.
    100 ÷ 3 = 33.33333>

P. Sharing Pennies
