Lesson 6

Function Machines

Developing the Lesson

Part 2. Function Tables

Tell students to turn to the Function Tables pages in the Student Activity Book. Working in pairs, students find the missing values in a function table. The rule is given in some of the tables, and students are asked to check if it works and to describe the rule in words below the table. For some tables, the rule needs to be found. Encourage students to use the guess and test strategy explored in Part 1 of the lesson.

In Question 3, students are asked to decide if a rule matches the patterns in the table. Since the pattern does not match the rule given, students will need to find the rule. Ask students to extend the pattern using the rule.

  • If the input is 20, what is the output? (60)
  • How do you know? (The rule that works for the rest of the table is N × 3,so 20 × 3 = 60.)

Questions 4 and 6 each have a multiplicative pattern. Questions 5 and 7 are two-step patterns. If students have trouble finding the two-step pattern, ask them to use their work on the previous problem. Encourage them to describe the rule in words, then use their words to help them write the expression in symbols.

Question 8 asks students to create a graph from the data in Question 6 and describe the pattern. Students should notice that the graph is a straight line going through (0,0).
