Students investigate the meaning of averages by working with connecting cubes. The activity provides students with a visual image that will help them understand the procedures for finding the median and the mean.

Connecting Cubes or Tiles. Fill each paper bag with about 80 separate connecting cubes. If your class does not have connecting cubes, borrow them from a primary teacher or substitute square-inch tiles for the cubes. Where the activity asks students to build towers, students can make rows of square-inch tiles on their desks as shown in Figure 1.
