Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.A
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (4.NBT.A.3)
4.AO.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

In Part 1, students read the story Two Heads Are Better One and analyze and find the error in the work of the characters. This provides students with the opportunity to practice representing data in a graph and using those patterns to make predictions and generalizations. In Part 2, students use a menu to choose practice using and representing multiplication patterns in graphs and tables.

Content in this Lesson

  • Making a point graph [E3].
  • Drawing best-fit lines [E4].
  • Making predictions and generalizations using tables and graphs [E7].
  • Identifying and extending multiplicative patterns [E10].
  • Finding and correcting mistakes in a problem.
  • Looking back to examine the reasonableness of a solution [MPE3].
  • Persisting in the problem-solving process.
  • Solving multistep word problems by interpreting and analyzing a set of data [MPE2].
  • Identifying patterns in graphs and connecting them to real-world events.
