Est. Class Sessions: 2–3
X

Mathematical Standards

4.AO.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students are introduced to functions through the activity Guess My Rule. Students use function machines to generate an “output” number for every “input” number. They record their findings in data tables and explore different ways to describe the patterns or rules generated by function machines.

Content in this Lesson

  • Making predictions and generalizations using tables and graphs [E8].
  • Identifying and extending multiplicative patterns [E10].
  • Representing patterns and functions using words, tables, and symbols [E11].
