TIMS Task

This item can be used as a Problem of the Week.

  1. Time in Years, Y
  2. Time in Seconds, S
    1. 145 seconds is 2 minutes and 25 seconds
    2. Either 2 min. 7 sec. or 2 min. 8 seconds

Responses will vary. Accept responses that are supported by clear, logical arguments.

  1. The times from 1968 to 1992 suggest a straight line, but after 1992 they level off between 127 sec. and 129 sec.
    1. Since the times have stayed pretty much the same since 1988 with a slight dip in 2008, predictions around 127 sec. make sense. Students may predict that it may drop another second to 126 sec.
    2. Using the best-fit line in Question 4, if the Year is 1964, the winning time is 151 sec. Using the logic in Question 5A, adding another 6 sec. to the winning time of 145 sec. in 1968 makes sense. 145 + 6 = 151 sec.

X. Story of the Graph

The graph below shows the winning times for Women's 200-meter Backstroke at the Olympics.

  1. What variable is plotted on the horizontal axis?
    ____________
  2. What variable is plotted on the vertical axis?
    ____________
    1. What was the winning time in 1968 in minutes and seconds? ____________

    2. What was the winning time in 2008 in minutes and seconds? ____________
  3. Do any of the points lie close to a line on any part of the graph? If so, draw best-fit lines for each
    set of points.
    1. If possible, predict the winning time for the 2016 Olympics. Show or tell how you made your prediction.
    2. What do you think the winning time would have been if this event were part of the 1964 Olympics?
