TIMS Challenge

Use this Challenge as a Problem of the Week.

  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. Answers will vary. Students may notice that the number in the second column keeps doubling and that the exponent in the third column is equal to the number of folds.
  4. 26 = 64
  5. The column headings are different but the Number of Grains Added is the same as the Number of Sections.

N. The Mystery Unfolds

Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

  1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half. Now unfold it. How many sections are there?
  2. Fold the paper in half again. This time without unfolding, fold it in half once more. Now unfold it. How many sections are there?
  3. Complete the following data table by folding your paper in half 3, 4, and 5 times:
  1. What patterns do you see?
  2. Predict the number of sections after the paper has been folded in half 6 times. Show or tell how you made your prediction.
  3. Compare your table to the Doubling Data Table after Question 2 in the Student Guide for Lesson 3 Doubles. How are they alike? How are they different?
