Workshop: Reasoning from Known Facts
Est. Class Sessions: 2Before the Lesson
In this Workshop, students will have the opportunity to revisit games and representations used earlier in the unit to continue to develop reasoning strategies for solving addition facts. Review student work and progress from previous lessons to guide instructional decisions about the following Expectations:
- E1.
- Represent addition and subtraction situations using multiple representations (e.g., stories, drawings, counters, number sentences, number lines, diagrams, ten frames).
- E2.
- Use mental math strategies and reasoning strategies (e.g., using doubles, making ten) to solve addition and subtraction problems within 20.
Place materials in the centers and plan to organize students to work with a partner who has similar needs. Some students are still using counting strategies to solve addition problems. Using the ten frame cards will help them visualize the 5s and 10s in the numbers to help them identify facts they do know and can reason from. Some students are proficient with these reasoning strategies for some facts but not all facts. The games provide enough flexibility to challenge these students to become fluent.
