UNIT PREPARATION

Display the class number line (0–130) where students can see and reach it with a pointer.

Attach a desk number line (0–100) to each student's desk to use throughout the year.

Display the Math Practices page where all students can see it.

Gather 4 clear jars for the Hundreds of Coins project started in Lesson 1.

Have the following tools readily available for the Daily Practice and Problems items in this unit.

    • You and your students will need:

      connecting cubes
coin jars from Unit 1 Lesson 1
      a collection of coins
      number lines

    • You will also need:

20 beans or other small counters
Display of the Two Ten Frames Master

LESSON SESSIONS DESCRIPTION SUPPLIES

LESSON 1

Hundreds of Coins

1 This ongoing project extends for the first 100 days of the school year. Within the contexts of money and the calendar, students gather and organize data and use patterns to make predictions and estimates. During this process, students solve problems that connect to many important concepts in the curriculum including grouping and counting, place value, addition, and multiplication.
  • four clear containers
  • 100 pennies
  • 20 nickels
  • 10 dimes
  • 4 quarters
  • highlighter
  • colored marker
  • collection of coins

LESSON 2

Birth Months

2 Students review the TIMS Laboratory Method (a four-step adaptation of the scientific method) in a teacher-guided investigation of students' birth months. Students collect and represent this information to solve problems.
  • connecting cubes
  • number lines
  • small self-adhesive notes

LESSON 3

Addition Strategies Seminar

2 Students participate in a "strategy session" to discuss using counting and reasoning strategies to solve addition problems with sums to 20. They build an Addition Strategies Menu for the Facts and discuss which strategies seem to be better suited for different addition facts. Students then practice using counting and reasoning strategies to solve addition problems.
  • connecting cubes
  • chart paper
  • tape

LESSON 4

Addition with Triangle Flash Cards

1 This lesson introduces a yearlong, systematic, strategies-based approach for developing fluency with the addition and subtraction facts. This lesson introduces the use of Triangle Flash Cards to practice the addition facts and begins work with Groups A and B. Students also revisit the properties of adding zero and fact families.
  • scissors
  • envelope or resealable plastic bag
  • paper clip
  • small buttons or counters
  • chart paper

LESSON 5

Make Ten

2–3 Students practice seeing ten and continue developing the make-ten strategy for solving addition problems. This builds on students' abilities to partition ten.
  • connecting cubes
  • number lines
  • envelope or resealable bag

LESSON 6

Use Doubles

2 Students practice finding doubles and using doubles to solve the doubles and near doubles addition facts. Students use a rule machine and ten frames to support their reasoning strategies for solving the doubles and near doubles.
  • connecting cubes
  • scissors
  • envelope or small resealable bag
  • game markers
  • clear plastic spinner or pencil and paper clip
  • Two of Everything by Lily Toy Hong

LESSON 7

Subtraction Strategies Seminar

2 Students participate in a "strategy session" to discuss counting and reasoning strategies to solve subtraction problems within 20. They build a Subtraction Strategies Menu for the Facts and discuss which strategies seem to be better suited for different subtraction facts. Students then practice using counting and reasoning strategies to solve subtraction problems.
  • connecting cubes
  • chart paper
  • tape

LESSON 8

Solve World Problems

3 Students learn how to represent addition and subtraction problems with drawings, connecting cubes, number lines, ten frames, and part-whole diagrams. They also develop strategies for getting to know a word problem while solving problems that involve join, separate/take away, part-whole, or compare situations.
  • connecting cubes
  • scissors
  • tape or glue stick
  • chart paper

LESSON 9

Workshop: Reasoning from Known Facts

2 Students revisit games and representations encountered earlier in the unit to practice using reasoning strategies to solve addition facts.
  • connecting cubes
  • clear plastic spinner or paper clip and pencil
  • scissors
  • envelope or resealable bag
