TIMS Challenge

This DPP item can be used as a Problem of the Week. Use this DPP item to practice the multiplication facts while solving number riddles.

  1. 36
  2. 24
  3. 56 or 70
  4. One possible response is given for each question.

Question 1: There are five numbers that are multiples of both 6 and 9. They are 18, 36, 54, 72, and 90. Since the number is less than 7 × 7 = 49, 54, 72, and 90 can't be the answer. Since it is greater than 4 × 8, it has to be greater than 32, so the answer is 36.

    Question 2: 24, 48, and 72 are multiples of both 6 and 8. The number is less than 9 × 4 = 36 and greater than 3 × 7 = 21, so the answer is 24.

    Question 3: The even multiples of 7 are 14, 28, 42, 56, and 70. The number is less than 9 × 8 = 72 and greater than 9 × 5 = 45, so 56 or 70 could be the mystery number.
  5. Multiplication mysteries will vary. Encourage students to share and solve each other's multiplication mysteries.
