Tangram Puzzles

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Give each student six square-inch tiles and assign the Shapes with Six Tiles Assessment Master. Students may use inch rulers. Students are asked to find the perimeter and area of a shape and then to make two more shapes with different perimeters from the first shape. In Question 1, the shape has an area of 6 square inches and a perimeter of 12 square inches. All shapes will have an area of 6 square inches. All other answers will vary depending on the shapes students make. Students should notice that the area is the same for all shapes.

Use the Shapes with Six Tiles Assessment Master and the Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to describe and analyze two-dimensional shapes using their properties [E1]; measure the area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes [E10]; and recognize that shapes can have the same area but different perimeters [E8].
