Mathematical Standards

3.G.A
Reason with shapes and their attributes. (3.G.A.2)
3.MD.C
Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition. (3.MD.C.5, 3.MD.C.6, 3.MD.C.7)
3.MD.D
Geometric measurement: recognize perimeter. (3.MD.D.8)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.

Students fill in tangram puzzles with all seven tans and then measure the edges to find the perimeter for each puzzle to the nearest half inch. They complete a chart on the perimeter and area for each of the puzzles. Since the puzzles are completed with the same seven pieces, they have the same area.

Content in this Lesson

  • Developing spatial visualization skills.
  • Measuring to find the area of a shape [E10].
  • Measuring to find the perimeter of a shape [E10].
  • Practicing measuring to the nearest half inch.
  • Recognizing that shapes can have the same area but different perimeters [E8].

E1.
Describe and analyze two-dimensional shapes using their properties (e.g., number of sides, length of sides, vertices, number and size of angles, number of right angles, and relationships between sides).
E8.
Recognize that shapes can have the same area but different perimeters.
E10.
Measure the area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes.
