Developing the Lesson

Part 2: Play Doubles, Doubles +1, Doubles −1

Direct students to the Doubles, Doubles +1, Doubles −1 pages in the Student Activity Book as you display the recording sheet. Ask for a volunteer to help you demonstrate the game. Play two or three rounds before asking students to play this game with a partner. Make sure students have access to connecting cubes to use as they play the game.

  • When you are adding doubles what do you notice about both of the numbers you are adding? (Possible responses: They are both the same. They are both either odd or even.)
  • What do you notice about the sums for all of the doubles? (The sums are always even.)
  • What do you notice about the two numbers when you are adding doubles +1 or doubles −1? (Possible response: One of the numbers is odd and one is even.)
  • Are the sums odd or even when you are adding doubles +1 or doubles −1? (The sums are always odd.)

Students will need the spinners from the Doubles,
Doubles +1, Doubles −1
pages for another activity later in this lesson. Ask students to keep the page in a safe place.
