Have a collection of pennies and nickels readily available.

  1. 1 nickel and 2 pennies
  2. 2 nickels and 3 pennies
  3. 3 nickels and 1 penny

Ask students to count on to check the total value of the coins. For example, for Question 1, point to the nickel and begin counting at 5¢ then count on 6¢, 7¢.
