Use DPP item O to practice addition facts in Group D and the use of the doubles strategy. Ask students to explain how they used the using-doubles strategy.

  1. 16¢; even. Possible strategy: 5 + 5 = 10 and 3 + 3 = 6 and 10 + 6 = 16 so 8 + 8 = 16.
  2. No; 4¢ + 4¢ = 8¢, 7¢ is less than 8¢; Possible strategy: I know 4 + 4 = 8 so 7¢ is not enough money.
