  • Xiong, Blip. Nine in One, Grr! Grr! Children's Book Press, San Francisco, CA, 1989.

This book is a retelling of a folk tale of the Hmong people of Laos. It tells the story of a tiger who is promised nine cubs each year by the great god Shao. The other animals are worried that there will be too many tigers on the Earth, so they change the promise to one cub every nine years. Thus, the book can be used to illustrate the difference between the ratios of 9 to 1 and 1 to 9. After reading the story, ask the class how many offspring the mother tiger would have after 9 years if the ratio were 9 cubs/1 year and how many cubs she would have after 9 years with a ratio of 1 cub/9 years.
