Lesson 4

Distance vs. Time

Est. Class Sessions: 4

Developing the Lesson

Part 2. Collect and Record the Data

Each group should practice using the stopwatches and timing the walker. When the timers are proficient with the stopwatches and the walker can walk at a constant speed, they are ready to collect the data. They repeat the procedure three times and record each trial in the Distance vs. Time Data Table in the Student Activity Book as shown in Figure 1. In each table, the results for the three trials are averaged (using the median), rounded to the nearest second, and recorded under the column heading “Average” (Question 6). Each data point is recorded as an ordered pair (Time, Distance) in the last column. The data tables in Figure 1 show the median times rounded to the nearest second and the corresponding ordered pairs for each distance.

Students may need to practice using the stopwatches before they collect data. DPP item E in Lesson 2 provides such an opportunity.

Observe students and use the Distance vs. Time Feedback Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to measure in inches and yards as they measure the track for this lab as described in Question 6 in the Student Guide [E5].
