Lesson 5

Problems of Scale

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

After students have shared their strategies for using equivalent ratios to solve problems involving scale measurements, assign Check-In: Questions 2–5 in the Student Guide.

Before students begin working, direct them to the display of the Math Practices page or to the Math Practices page in the Student Guide Reference section. Tell students that as they work on these problems they are going to focus on Math Practice Expectations two, five, and six.

  • When you think about solving these problems, what are some strategies that you may be able to use? (Possible response: Read the problem carefully so you know what it is asking, write a number sentence to find the equivalent ratio, make a chart or table, use multiplication or division.)
  • What should you remember to include when a question asks you to show or tell how you found your solution? (Possible response: Make sure to explain all of your calculations using either words or number sentences. Use words to show the steps you used to solve each part of a problem.)
  • Why is it important to include the labels in your solutions? (Possible response: Since you are using one unit of measurement in a model to represent another measurement on an actual object, it is important to identify the units so you know if you are talking about the scale model, map, or drawing or if you are talking about the actual object or distance.)

Remind students to think about these three expectations as they complete Check-In: Questions 2–5.

Use Check-In: Questions 2–5 on the Problems of Scale pages in the Student Guide and the Problems of Scale Feedback Box in the Teacher Guide to assess students' abilities to find equivalent ratios using tools and multiplication and division strategies [E3]; use ratios to solve word problems [E4]; convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system [E6]; find a strategy [MPE2]; show work [MPE5]; and use labels [MPE6].

The Workshop in Lesson 6 provides targeted practice with these expectations.
