Make tools for measuring length, mass, and volume using common household items:

  • Draw a plan for making a balance using common household items. Build your balance using items you bring in from home or items at the classroom center.
  • Make a 25-gram standard mass by filling a film canister or another small container with a lid. Fill the container with the amount of sand or rice needed to make a 25-gram mass. You will need a balance and centimeter cubes or other standard masses.
  • Use a graduated cylinder to make a one-liter container using a can or jar.
  • Make a ruler or meter stick using pieces of wood or strips of cardboard.
