After students read and discuss the story ask them to work with a partner or in a small group to answer Questions 1–7 in the Student Guide. Students are asked to read the scenario presented in each question and decide what variable is appropriate to use for each situation and then suggest at least one standard unit that could be used. The table in Figure 1 shows some possible responses for each question.
Ask student groups to explain how they decided which variable would be used and the values they choose.
Assign the Variables page in the Student Activity Book to students to complete independently.
