Mathematical Standards

5.NBT.B
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. (5.NBT.B.6)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students develop conceptual models and flexible strategies for division by one- and two-digit divisors. They explore how to solve division problems using a column model, a rectangle model, and mental math strategies. These methods build on the estimation strategies developed in the previous lesson. They also build a foundational understanding for the partial quotients method presented in Lesson 3.
