The story “George Washington Carver: Man of Measure” is the context for this lesson. Students deepen their understanding of the use of variables and standard units of measurement in mathematics and scientific investigation.

Content in this Lesson

  • Choosing appropriate units to measure variables [E10].
  • Representing variables [E11].
  • Connecting mathematics and science to real-world events.
  • Understanding the role of standard units of measure in scientific investigations.

TIMS Tip

There are several extension activities included at the end of this lesson that can be incorporated into a center. In these activities, students use common household items to make tools for measuring variables. To create a center, you will need at least one standard balance, a standard mass set or centimeter cubes, a meter stick or ruler, and a graduated cylinder. You may also want to collect household items that could be used in this center, including tin pie pans, small boxes, film canisters or other small containers with lids, string, small pieces of wood or strips of cardboard, sand or rice, and small jars or cans.
