Lesson 8

Spreading Out

Est. Class Sessions: 4–5

Summarizing the Lesson

Organize students so that each group can review the work of another group and give feedback.

  • What is a good first question to ask after a group has shared their solution? (How did this group solve the problem? Did their strategy work? )
  • What is good feedback? (specific suggestions and questions that clarify what was done)
  • What kind of feedback is not very helpful? (too general such as “good job”)
  • If you are the students who are receiving feedback, what should you do? (Listen carefully, and ask questions if you don't understand the feedback or need more information.)

Direct students to the How Many Drops Feedback Box Student-to-Student section. Tell students to share their solution strategies using both their written work and an oral explanation. As the students are sharing their solutions, the other students will listen and give feedback using the Feedback Box. Comments and suggestions from the entire group should be recorded on one Student-to-Student Feedback Box attached to the student's work. The feedback should then be shared and discussed. Students can use the feedback they receive to revise their work before they hand it in for teacher review.

Use the How Many Drops Assessment Masters with Student-to-Student and Teacher to Student Feedback Boxes to assess students' abilities to make predictions and generalizations using data tables, graphs, and averages [E14]; use ratios to solve problems [E8]; know what the problem is asking [MPE1]; choose a good strategy [MPE2]; communicate problem solving strategies clearly [MPE5]; and label numbers so you know what they mean [MPE6].
