5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.5)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students solve an open-response problem that asks them to estimate the number of blades of grass in a specified area. Students use sampling in order to make their estimates. First students develop a plan for solving the problem. Then students collect data and use the data to solve the problem and write about their solutions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Solving open-response problems and communicating solution strategies.
  • Developing number sense for large numbers.
  • Collecting and using data to solve problems.
  • Finding the mean and median [E13].
  • Measuring area.
  • Solving problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Using ratios to solve problems [E8].
  • Showing or telling your thinking [MPE5].
  • Choosing an appropriate strategy [MPE2].
  • Using labels [MPE6].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Student Work. Prepare copies of student work for students to review. Each student pair will need work from one student to review. There are student work samples provided as Masters. To efficiently review work from more than one student, have different students review different student work. For example, ask half the class to review Ana's work and the other half of the class to review Tim's work.

E13.
Find the mean and median of a data set.
MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know the questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE4.
Check my calculations. If I make mistakes, I correct them.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.
