Demonstrate the Game. This is a game for student
pairs. Each pair will need a set of Number Cards
0–8, the More or No More Recording Sheets, the
More or No More Spinner, and a clear plastic spinner
or a paper clip and a pencil. Ask a student volunteer
to help you demonstrate the game. Figure 2
illustrates the steps of the game.
Player 1 draws a number card and places it face up
on the table. Player 1 and Player 2 each record the
number using the ten frame on their recording
sheets. Player 1 then spins the spinner, completes the
ten frame and writes a number sentence. Player 2
then spins the spinner and does the same on his or
her recording sheet. The player with the greatest sum
gets a point. If they tie, both players get one point.
Player 2 now draws a number card to begin the next
round. Whoever has the most points after five
rounds wins the game.
Play More or No More. Have students play five
rounds of the More or No More Game with a partner.
As they play, circulate about the room observing students'
abilities to use the counting-on strategy and
the property of zero to add.
As students play the More or No More Game, observe their
abilities to represent addition using ten frames and number
sentences [E2], use strategies that apply the properties of
addition (zero) to solve addition problems [E4], add within ten
using counting strategies [E7], and use mental math strategies
to add for the facts in Groups A and B [E8].
Students will benefit from multiple opportunities to practice
using strategies with these addition facts. The following
activities can be placed in a center to provide ongoing targeted
practice:
Addition Flash Card Sort. Place several sets of the Addition
Flash Cards for Groups A and B and copies of the Sorting
Flash Cards Board page from the Student Activity Book in a
center. Encourage students to practice applying strategies
they have learned as they practice the flash cards, individually
or with a partner.
Addition Flash Card War. Students work with a partner to
play this game. Each student will need a set of the Addition
Flash Cards: Groups A and B. To play the game, each student
will turn one of his or her cards face up and solve the number sentence
that is showing. The student with the highest sum wins
the round and collects both cards. If the two cards have equal
sums, the students each turn over another card to see who
wins the round.
More or No More Game. Place several copies of the More or
No More Game pages in a center. Students work with a partner
to practice applying strategies to solve the addition facts
in Groups A and B.
Counting-On Game. Students were introduced to the
Counting-On Game in Unit 4 Lesson 4. Place connecting
cubes, large plastic cups, and several copies of the Counting-
On Spinners page from the Student Activity Book in a center.
Students work with a partner to practice using the counting-on
strategy.
