Summarizing the Lesson

Review Strategies. After students have finished playing the More or No More Game, ask them to share the strategies they used to solve each problem. Use these or similar discussion prompts to guide the discussion.

  • If I turn over a number card with 6 on it and then spin +0, what number sentences could I write to represent this problem? (0 + 6 or 6 + 0)
  • What strategies can you use to solve 0 + 6 or 6 + 0? (Possible response: You just know the answer is 6 because when you add zero you are not adding anything.)
  • If I turn over a number card with 5 and then spin 2, what number sentences can I write to represent this problem? (5 + 2 or 2 + 5)
  • How do you know these two number sentences will have the same sum? (Possible response: It doesn't matter what order the numbers are in when you add. The answer is the same.)
  • What strategy did you use to solve this problem? (Possible response: I just knew the answer was 7 because we have been practicing so much.)
  • Use the ten frame to help us understand how you knew the answer: (Possible response: When I looked at my ten frame, the first row was filled in, so I knew that was 5 and then I said 6, 7 in my head.)
