At the Circus: Join and Take Away

Ask students to reflect on the work in this lesson by having one student pair read their addition and subtraction stories to a second student pair, and ask them to fill in part-whole diagrams and write number sentences to match the problems. Then have partners switch sides.

As a class, make a list of addition sentences with related subtraction sentences that student pairs wrote in their number stories. Emphasize that both the addition and related subtraction sentences use the same numbers and that you can reverse the order of the numbers in an addition number sentence but you cannot reverse the numbers in a subtraction number sentence.
