Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP2.
Reason quantitatively.

Students learn how to use Addition Flash Cards to practice the addition facts to ten. In this unit, students focus on developing mental math strategies for the addition facts in Groups A and B.

Content in this Lesson

  • Using strategies to solve addition problems in Groups A and B [E7, E8].
  • Using turn-around facts to solve addition problems [E4].
  • Representing addition situations using ten frames [E2].
  • Representing addition using number sentences [E2].
  • Applying the property of zero to solve addition problems with sums to ten [E4].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Addition Flash Cards. Copy the Addition Flash Cards: Groups A and B on heavier paper or card stock. Cut the flash cards apart and store them in an envelope for each student. You may want to provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.

Prepare Number Cards. Copy the Number Cards 0–8 Homework Master on heavier paper or card stock. Cut the cards apart and store them in an envelope for each student pair. Students will use these to play a game in class.

Gather Materials for Spinners. Students can either use overlay clear spinners or use a pencil and paper clip.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. There are several activities described on the Practicing Addition Facts Homework Master that can be placed in a center to provide targeted practice with strategies for the addition facts in Groups A and B. Prepare additional sets of Addition Flash Cards: Groups A and B and copies of the Sorting Flash Cards Board page from the Student Activity Book and the pages needed for the More or No More Game also in the Student Activity Book and Teacher Guide.
