TIMS Task

Answers will vary. To begin, you can ask the class to skip count in unison. This task provides an opportunity for students to practice starting, stopping, and resetting stopwatches. However, they can complete this item using a clock with a second hand.

N. Fraction Skip Counting

Work with a partner on these problems. Take turns timing each other.

  1. Skip count by halves for 15 seconds. Write down how far you were able to count.
    Start like this: 1/2, 1, 11/2, 2, 21/2, etc.
  2. Skip count by thirds for 15 seconds. Write down how far you were able to count.
    Start like this: 1/3, 2/3, 1, 11/3, 12/3, 2, etc.
  3. Estimate how far you think you can count by fifths in 15 seconds. Try it.
    How close was your estimate?
