Lesson 12

Workshop: Problem Solving with Fractions

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Assign Check-In: Questions 1–3 on the Sharing Paper pages in the Student Activity Book for students to complete individually. Encourage them to use whatever tools and models make sense to them. Make fraction circle pieces available. Students can also use the Fractions on Number Lines Chart in the Student Guide Reference section.

Upon completion, discuss students' solutions. Figure 4 shows two models and possible responses.

  • Compare your answer to a neighbor's. Did you each find the same answer for each question?
  • Compare your estimates. Did you use similar benchmarks? Which ones?
  • Compare your strategies. Did you solve the problems in the same way?
  • Can you think of another way to solve the problems? Show your neighbor.

Use Check-In: Questions 1–3 and the Feedback Box on the Sharing Paper pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to compare and order fractions using tools (e.g., area models, number lines), benchmarks, and multiplication and division strategies to find common denominators [E6]; add and subtract fractions including those with unlike denominators [E7]; use visual models or equations to represent the solution for word problems involving adding and subtracting fractions [E8]; use benchmark fractions to estimate sums and differences [E9]; find a strategy [MPE2]; check for reasonableness [MPE3]; and show work [MPE5].
