X

Mathematical Standards

5.NF.A
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. (5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2)
5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students model and solve fraction addition problems with sums less than and greater than one. They use circle pieces to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. Students add fractions with both like and unlike denominators and explore using multiplication and division strategies to find equivalent fractions with common denominators.

Content in this Lesson

  • Adding fractions including those with unlike denominators using circle pieces [E7].
  • Writing mixed numbers for fractions greater than one [E1].
  • Using visual models and equations to represent the solution for word problems [E8].
  • Finding equivalent fractions using tools (e.g., fraction circle pieces) and multiplication strategies [E4].
  • Using benchmark fractions to estimate sums [E9].

E4.
Find equivalent fractions using tools (e.g., area models, number lines) and multiplication and division strategies.
E7.
Add and subtract fractions including those with unlike denominators.
E8.
Use visual models or equations to represent the solution for word problems involving adding and subtracting fractions.
E9.
Use benchmark fractions to estimate sums and differences and assess the reasonableness of answers.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
