Lesson 4

Fraction Sentences

Est. Class Sessions: 3
X

Mathematical Standards

5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Students use fraction circle pieces to make figures and then represent the figures with number sentences. They use circle pieces to explore fractions greater than one as they develop procedures for writing a mixed number as an improper fraction and an improper fraction as a mixed number. Students play the Fraction Fill Games to develop flexibility with decomposing fractions into the sums of smaller fractions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing fractions greater than one with fraction circle pieces [E1].
  • Writing improper fractions as mixed numbers [E1].
  • Writing mixed numbers as improper fractions [E1].
  • Explaining strategies for solving problems [MPE5].
  • Using tools (circle pieces and other area models) to solve problems [MPE2].

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. Prepare copies of the Fraction Fill Games and Fraction Games Spinners pages from the Student Activity Book to place in a center with spinners and sets of fraction circle pieces.

TIMS Tip

At the end of the lesson, ask students to save their Fraction Fill Games and Fraction Games Spinners pages from the Student Activity Book. They will revisit the games in the Workshop in Lesson 7.

E1.
Represent and identify fractions (e.g., proper, improper, mixed number) using area models, drawings, number lines, words, symbols, and number sentences.
E2.
Recognize that equal fractional parts of a unit whole are the same size (e.g., all fourths of a rectangle are the same size).
E3.
Identify the unit whole when given a fractional part of a whole.
E4.
Find equivalent fractions using tools (e.g., area models, number lines) and multiplication and division strategies.
E5.
Decompose fractions into the sums of smaller fractions (e.g., 3/4 = 1/2 + 1/4).
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
