Lesson 11

Subtract Fractions

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

To summarize the lesson, ask students to write and solve their own problems involving the subtraction of fractions. Ask students to think of a problem that satisfies the following set of rules:

  1. The problem should be a real-world story problem.
  2. The problem should only involve fractions that can be shown with fraction circle pieces.
  3. The answer to the problem should be more than zero and less than one.

After writing their problems, students should trade with a partner and solve each other's problems using fraction circle pieces. Ask students to write number sentences for their solutions and explain their solutions to their partners. If time permits, ask several sets of partners to share their problems and solutions with the whole class.

  • How can you estimate the answer to the problem?
  • Model the problem using display circle pieces.
  • Write a number sentence to match the problem.
  • Show how you solved the problem.
  • Find fractions with common denominators and solve this problem using Julia's method.
