Mathematical Standards

5.NF.A
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. (5.NF.A.1)
5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students use fraction circle pieces to find equivalent fractions and compare fractions. They explore using multiplication and division strategies to find equivalent fractions and to compare fractions by finding fractions with common denominators.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing fractions using circle pieces and other area models [E1].
  • Using words and numbers to name fractions represented by area models [E1].
  • Recognizing that equal fractional parts of a unit whole are the same size (e.g., all fourths of a rectangle are the same size) [E2].
  • Identifying the unit whole when given a fractional part of a whole [E3].
  • Finding equivalent fractions using area models [E4].
  • Finding equivalent fractions using multiplication and division strategies [E4].
  • Compare and order fractions using tools and multiplication and division strategies to find equivalent fractions with common denominators [E6].

Materials Preparation

Make Equivalent Fractions Chart. Make a display of the Equivalent Fractions Chart page in the Student Activity Book on a large sheet of chart paper. See Figure 1. This chart can be used as a display throughout the remainder of this unit. Alternatively, a display of the Student Activity Book page can be shown.
