Encourage students to share the strategies they used to find the number of pennies needed to cover their desktop.

Students might decide to think about organizing the pennies into rows and columns. Students also might try to pack the pennies into a small section and then estimate the number of sections on the desk.

B. How Many Pennies

  1. Predict how many pennies it will take to cover your desktop. The pennies must lie flat. Record your prediction.
  2. Check your prediction. (Hint: You do not need a lot of pennies. How many do you need to run across the length of your desk? How many do you need to run across the width?)
