TIMS Challenge

This problem can serve as a Problem of the Week. As appropriate, encourage the use of possible operations such as 44 and 4/4.

Answers will vary. One possible response is given for each.

(4 ÷ 4) − (4 ÷ 4) = 0

(4 ÷ 4) × (4 ÷ 4) = 1

(4 ÷ 4) + (4 ÷ 4) = 2

(4 + 4 + 4) ÷ 4 = 3

44 ÷ (4 × 4) = 42

(4 × 4 + 4) ÷ 4 = 5

N. 4 Fours

Use the number 4 four times in any combination of operations, parentheses, and exponents to arrive at the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3. Here's an example of using four 4s to arrive at 5.

(4 × 4 + 4) ÷ 4 = 5

Challenge: Find as many numbers as you can with four 4s.
