TIMS Task

DPP Challenge V can be used as a Problem of the Week.

The area of the shaded part of the rectangle is 2946 sq cm.

Possible response: First I multiplied 80 cm × 40 cm = 3200 sq cm to find the area of the large rectangle. Then I found the area of each of the small rectangles by multiplying 14 cm × 9 cm = 126 sq cm and 32 cm × 4 cm = 128 sq cm. I added 126 sq cm + 128 sq cm = 245 sq cm to see how much total space was taken by the two small rectangles. Finally I subtracted 3200 sq cm − 254 sq cm = 2946 sq cm to find the area of the shaded part of the large rectangle.

V. Find Area

Find the area of the shaded part of the large rectangle. Explain the steps you used to find this answer.
