Content in this Lesson

  • Representing numbers to the thousandths using symbols, words, number lines, and expanded form [E1].
  • Comparing and ordering decimals to the thousandths using place value understanding [E3].
  • Recognizing that in a multidigit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left [E5].
  • Adding and subtracting decimals to the hundredths using models and strategies [E7].
  • Estimating decimal sums and differences [E9].

Materials for the Teacher

Materials Preparation

Prepare Game Materials and Stations. Prepare 3 stations of each of the 5 games. Not every student will play every game, with the exception of Decimal Order. (See Workshop Menu.) Gather the game materials you saved from previous lessons. If you need to make new materials, Masters of all game pages are included in this Lesson. Make copies of the consumable game boards and some direction pages to place at each station. Because students choose between games, you will need to estimate the type and number of copies of the game Masters needed based on your class. Other game materials are minimal (several coins, spinners, toothpicks, digit cards, and Decimal Cards). Make copies of the Decimal Grids Master from Lesson 4 and Decimal Place Value Chart Master from Lesson 3 to support students playing Decimal Order, and copies of the Decimal Number Lines, Decimal Grids, and Hundredths Circles Masters for all students to use for support as needed throughout the Workshop.

Prepare Decimal Cards 1 and 2. Use the prepared sets of Decimal Cards 1 and Decimal Cards 2 from Lesson 4, or make new sets using the Masters. Each student pair will need one deck made of Decimal Cards 1 and 2. For students who are “Working on it,” provide decks made entirely from 2 copies of the Decimal Cards 1 section of the Decimal Order Masters.

Prepare Digit Cards 0–9. Use the prepared decks of Digit Cards 0–9 from Lessons 4 and 8, or make new sets using the Master. Student pairs playing the Spin and Read Decimals Game will need a deck made of 3 sets of digit cards. Student pairs playing Add or Subtract to 1 Game will need a deck made of 6 sets of digit cards.
